How To Honor All Students During Tough Classroom Discussions

posted on August 26, 2018 Note: The purpose of discussing literature and other print and nonprint texts in class is to gain a deeper understanding of the author’s purpose and to gain insight into ideas and experiences that may be the same or different from our own. Texts serve as both mirrors into our own lives and windows into other people’s lives, according to Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop. With that understanding in mind, we should seek to understand the experiences of both the authors and our classmates, not to argue or insist that our own opinion is the correct one. After the death of Heather Heyer following the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville last year and the state of our national political divide became national news, I realized we needed to hold some tough discussions in our English classes, particularly in my junior level American Literature class. The idea of leading these discussions with a classroom full of teenagers, who may be impassioned one day and apathetic the next, was scary — and still is. But I know that it is important that all students have a safe place to discuss the issues that our country — and our world, really — is facing.   So, with the help of friends and resources online, I developed some guidelines to help ensure that all my students can safely discuss issues while honoring differences in opinions and perspectives. I read several resources, including: â€Å"Starting With Ourselves: Preparing for Tough Classroom Conversations† by TeachingTolerance.org â€Å"Teaching Strategies: Contracting† by Facing History and Ourselves The Teaching Tolerance guide â€Å"Let’s Talk! Discussing Race, Racism and Other Difficult Topics with Studentsâ€Å" â€Å"Guidelines for Discussing Difficult or Controversial Topics† by the  Center for Research on Learning and Teaching at the University of Michigan Based on those readings and conversations with colleagues across the country, I developed the following guidelines for my students: Discussion guidelines Every student in this class has a right to learn in a safe environment and a right to be respected. I know that many of you have grown up together, and that you have already exhibited a sensitivity to each others differences and perspectives. I want to make sure that we continue respecting each other, even as we grapple with difficult issues. To that end, I’d like for us to understand that there are closed issues and open issues. Closed topics are ones that are not open for debate in this class. You can recognize closed topics by these guidelines: If it is blatantly unconstitutional (ex. slavery), it is off limits. If it is not something you would hear being debated on the news (not just social media), it is off limits. If what you’re going to say might deeply offend demean someone or  dismiss  their understandings and perspectives, do not say it. I advised my students that as we discussed controversial issues, they need to remember to refer to our readings or non-print texts that we study in class instead of relying solely on their personal anecdotes. Doing so would enable us to discuss the issues without getting too personal and making people feel uncomfortable. Last year, we were able to discuss Charlottesville in small groups and through written responses, and students held a Socratic Seminar over issues addressed in The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I want to do better this year. What â€Å"ground rules† do you set in your class to help your students participate safely in class discussions about difficult topics? A Short History of Ethics Essay examples - 1283 Words

In chapters three and four of A Short History of Ethics, Alastair MacIntyre makes a clear distinction between two philosophical doctrines at loggerheads: the Sophists and Socrates. The Sophistic amalgam of personal success, lust and power is constantly interrogated by an interlocutor in an endless plight to reveal Sophistic ignorance, fruitless desires and the right to universal justice. MacIntyre identifies the codes of both parties, and further complements the debate with historic examples to conclude the social success (or lack thereof) and persuasion of both sides. MacIntyre begins by outlining the general amalgam of Sophistic theory: success. The aretà © (virtue) of a Sophist is to be a successful citizen through conforming to the†¦show more content†¦He then reasons that the Sophists believe in a non-moral conventional man; a Homeric persona who is shifted from one era of social acceptance to another (17). MacIntyre also disputes the criteria with which one can be â€Å"natural† and offers the second flaw: To be identified as selfish, unselfish, aggressive, and so on, one must be compared to the norms of the current society; or in other words, one must be described by socially established terminology (18). Therefore, what was to be pre-social/natural actually maintains some form of social likeness to allow for the comparison (or contrast). Sophistic theology is fed only by relativism. This personal truth confuses the difference between philosophy and the actions of a hypothetical natural man. Philosophy, being the quest for the universal truth, involves the philosopher remaining outside of society, yet fully understanding and questioning the social order. However, Sophism fails to distinguish the difference between this philosophical â€Å"standing out† from the way a natural man would act. MacIntyre follows up with the portrayal in Thrasymachean guise, â€Å"The wolf has to wear the sheep’s clothing of the conventional moral values† (18). Sophism accepts this con man behaviour to be moral, although the motives are solely power and pleasure. With this, MacIntyre reveals that the rhetoric of the Sophist must appease the interests of the public. Law Analysis The Ontario Court of Appeal

Questions: 1. Does Ms. Smith have a claim(s) and if so, what is the nature of her claim. If the case goes to trial, what do you think the outcome of the trial will be? Explain how you came to your decision. 2. You are the judge at the Ontario Court of Appeal. Your task is to decide whether the provisions in the Criminal Code conflict with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Explain how you made your decision. Answers: Solution I For the past thirty years, Ms. Smith has been living in the apartment. She is a compulsive shopper due to which over the period of time she has collected boxes of various goods which are stacked in her apartment. Due to this, her apartment is completely accumulated which by chance the other residents of the apartment go to know. Mr. Johnson warning her with respect hazards from fire due to the stacked boxes advised that the boxes should be kept in storage. A month later during the shifting of the boxed by Mr. Johnson at the time, these boxes were in his possession when there were various break-ins in the locker room during which some of Ms. Smith's boxes were also stolen. This was not informed to Ms. Smith by Mr. Johnson. The main issues that arise in this situation post-Ms. Smith has received her insurance is that: Whether Ms. Smith can make any other type of claim for her lost boxes and take it to trial? What should be the consequence if the same is taken into the trial? When voluntarily a properties possession is taken by one person, who is the bailee, and this property belongs some other person, who is the bailor, there is the creation of bailment. It is essential that the bailee ensures that during the time that the property is in his possession such due and proper care of it is taken as would be expected by a prudent owner of the goods. In the case wherein there is damaged caused or the goods are lost during the time of bailment then the bailee has to prove that he had taken due care that any man in possession of the goods would have taken. It is necessary for a bailment to have the (Botten and Steeves, 2010)t (i) the bailor who usually owns the goods deliver the goods to the bailor who is given the possession of these goods. The possession is made for a specific purpose and it necessary that goods are returned subsequent back to the bailor at his behest. There has in this case been the bailment of goods to Mr. Johnson by Ms. for storing the goods in the locker. Thus, it is clear that there has been a delivery of goods from the owner who is Ms. Smith to Mr. Johnson to take possession for the purpose of storing which is a specific purpose. However, this bailment is a gratuitous bailment since there is no charge that has been created in favor of Mr. Johnson, who is the bailee over the products. The Canadian Courts through time have constantly stated that the standard of care which is imposed due to gratuitous bailment is much lesser then that which is required for the bailee to be charged with the breach(Price v. Leblanc, 1957). It has further been held by various Canadian Courts that it is only when there is proof of gross negligence can the liability be on the gratuitous(Melburn Truck Line Inc. v. Plastmo Ltd., 1992). It will be upon of the bailor to prove that the goods were lost or damaged during the possession with the bailed. If there is proof by the bailor that it was during the possession of the bailee that there was damage to the goods or that they were lost then the burden of proof would be upon bailee for proving that there had been reasonable care which had been taken by bailee if however this is not proved then the bailee would be held liable (Morris v. C.W. Martin Sons, Ltd, 1965). Thus, there can be the claim made by Ms. Smith because the goods were stolen while they were in possession of Mr. Johnson to be stored. It would then be upon Mr. Johnson to prove that he had taken reasonable care that any prudent person would take in his place. However, in the given situation the Ms. Smith's claim would hold stronger since Mr. Johnson despite knowing the fact that there were goods that were being stolen still stored the goods in the storehouse. Solution II The case is such that there is video store that is owned by Mr. Garcia in Toronto in which he sells and rents out videotape and magazine of hardcore content. It was contented that there was a breach of 163(1)(a) and 163(2)(a) of the Criminal Code to which argued that these section were in violating his right under the Charter of Rights. The issue to be decided is whether there is a contravention of Charter of Right by 163(1)(a) and 163(2)(a). It is under section 163 that the obscene materials selling and distribution has been dealt with in the case of R. V. Butler in the year 1992 in which the SC had considered it for the first time(R. v. Butler, 1992). In this case it was opined unanimously by the SC that there was no contravention of the provisions that were there in the Criminal Code and the prohibitions that existed against pornography with the freedoms that had been granted under the Charter of Rights under section 2(b) and the same can be justified under the Charters section 1 which provides that there would be limits that were reasonable as prescribed by law (Grover, 2004). There was also a special committee that was formed for prostitution and pornography The Fraser Committee, this committee stated that the sections were not unconstitutional or in contravention even though on the face of it, it may seem that it is contravening the freedom of expression which has been granted under the Charter. There are however some reasonable restrictions too which have been attached to the freedoms that have been granted. They were of the view that pornography and prostitution would at some level lead to some sections of the society being treated differently. Thus it cannot be stated that the section 163 prohibition of pornography was not unconstitutional in any manner and that the prohibitions fell under reasonable restrictions over the freedoms that have been granted under the Charter itself under section 1. Since if there is no restriction on the freedom it would lead to due to rampant pornography some sector of the society being treated in a different manner bringing in inequality in the society. NATO means the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; it is an Intergovernmental military alliance based on North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on April 4th 1948. It comprises of 28 nations, and its headquarter is in Brussels in Belgium (Marco, 2009). Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Libyan Conflict Involvement specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is the world largest military alliance, and its member states agreed to offer a joint defense in reaction to any external attack by any external enemy. Example of interventions, where NATO has been involved include: Kosovo Intervention 1999, Afghanistan war, Iraq training Mission on August 2004, Gulf of Aden anti-piracy on August 2009 and Libyan Conflict 2011 (Peter, 2000). Libyan conflict started on 12th and 13th 2011 where violence broke out between protesters and the government under Colonel Muamar Gadaffi who came into power in 1969.The Libyan revolt quickly developed into an insurgency and then into civil war (Itamar, 2012). On 17th March 2011, United Nations Security Resolution of 1973 was enacted, and it authorized a cease fire and military action to protect civilians. Consequently NATO forces enforced no fly-zone and enforced an arms embargo against Libya. A leader of a member country of NATO would consider the following before participating in the Libyan conflict. There are some risks involved, since it is vital for the leader to evaluate the risks that would affect his nation negatively before deciding to participate or not in the Libyan conflict. For example, loss of a significant relationship with other countries and the cost involved (Peter, 2000). Revenge is also a factor to be considered. Here, a nation would consider past damages caused by Libya against its interests. In addition, an evaluation would be carried out to determine the need of the revenge (Marco, 2009). Trade relations between Libya and the nation would also be a weighty factor to deliberate on before deciding whether or not to participate in the conflict. For example, if the country is dependent on Libyan products such as oil, hydrocarbon which is of high quality and extraction is easy and profitable the leader could decide to participate in the war to safeguard the imports and exports (Itamar, 2012). Another factor is the vulnerability to terrorism. The conflict would lead to a fallen state and terrorist would take advantage of the conflict to spread terrorism propaganda and recruit more people to join their group. This would in turn be a threat to the international peace (Itamar, 2012).Advertising Looking for research paper on international relations? Let's see if we can help you! Here, a leader would consider the stability of government back home, for example, threats from opposition parties as it would be better to sol ve internal problems first (Peter, 2000). A leader is that person who inspires people to achieve a particular objective. A leader in addition must have a dream, obligation and energy to ensure that the dream is achieved. Leadership skills are tools, capabilities and conducts that a person requires to be successful in motivating and directing others (John, 2010). The following leadership skills would be significant and relevant for a leader while deciding on whether to join the Libyan conflict or not. Leaders need to communicate effectively and efficiently. Thus, a leader should communicate to other decision makers effectively in order to move them toward achieving the chosen goal (Terry, 2002). A leader must have a will to take the risk. The leader must be willing to take calculative risks since the decision to participate in the conflict is risky as the outcomes are uncertain (John, 2010). A leader should be a problem solver. It is crucial that a leader knows how to handle various problems since the decision to participate in the conflicts should be thought of carefully. Therefore, a leader should identify the problem tactfully, and in this case the problem is the Libyan conflict and makes the final decision on whether to participate in the conflict (John, 2010). Ability to achieve a tangible result is a must. To portray this, the leader must be committed to achieving results and have a drive to move toward achieving a common goal. This will ensure that the citizens agree with the decision made by their leader (Terry, 2002). A leader must have the capacity to motivate people to achieve the common goal. A leader therefore should motivate other decision makers in the government to come up with thoughts that would aid in deciding whether or not to participate in the Libya conflict (Terry, 2002).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Libyan Conflict Involvement specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn M ore A leader should be a proven planner. Planning is very crucial as the interests of the country would be endangered in case of poor planning. Thus, a leader should come up with various achievable strategies that would keep everyone moving together toward achieving the common goal (John, 2010). In conclusion, a leader should consider various factors before participating in the Libya conflict and to do so, the leader must have the above leadership skills. This is important since a leader is a representation of the country’s interests. Therefore, uncalculated move would be a catastrophic. Reference List Itamar, R. Miracle Economics essays

Miracle Economics essays In his book Asiaà s Miracle Economies, Jon Woronoff examines the dramatically quick economic growth of five Asian countries. The five countries examined are Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Through his study the author demonstrates that there was no miracle involved in these countries growth. They applied specific strategies that were adapted to their local environment. Some of these strategies worked some didnà t. The author says that by examining these nations, one may be able to repeat there success. The book is divided into three parts. In "Part One: Places" the author tells where these countries started from. Some were poorer than average. Some had little natural resources. The people of these countries had different outlooks on the world thus different behavioral tendencies. Part I is divided into five chapters each examining a countries. Woronoff begins Chapter 1 "Japanà s Two Miracles," by discussing Japanà s first industrial revolution. In 1853 when Commodore Perry opened Japanà s ports to foreigners, Japan was feudal society. It was not very evolved nor very modern. Agriculture was good but not enough for the growing population. Japan wanted to learn from the West. Japan sent many students to Europe and the United States. Soon Japan began industrializing. Groups called zaibatsu formed. These zaibatsu dominated industry and commerce. They manipulated politics to suit their own needs. Japan soon began concentrating own building a War Machine. After the Russo-Japanese War, the country went into a recession. But after the First World War, Imperial Japan began growing up until the end of the WWII. The war left Japan resouceless and heavily overpopulated. The victorious Allies gave or rather imposed democratization onto Japan. The zaibatsu were disbanded. Japan was left weak. The United States provided much financial support. Japanà s economy then began growing very fast. The Japanese protected...

Multiple regression Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Multiple regression - Term Paper Example Multiple regression is an effective technique to identify a relationship between one dependent variable and multiple independent variables. It is hypothesized the property crime rates per thousand inhabitants is dependent on multiple factors such as per capita income, school dropout percentage, population density, percentage of people living in urban area and so on. In order to establish a certain relationship between the variables, multiple regression was used. While crimes is the dependent variable, other variables such as state, per capita income, dropouts, average precipitation, public aid recipients, population density, unemployment, percentage of people living in urban areas were considered as independent variable. Minitab was used to perform multiple regression analysis. It was found that only two variables had a significant relationship with the variable crime rates: dropouts and urban. It was found that as percentage of dropouts increased, the crime rate per thousand inhabit ants also increased. It is also evident from the data set that urban areas are having higher crime rates as compared to rural areas. Other variables included in the study did not have much impact on the dependent variable. The first column of the table below shows the regression coefficient of all the independent variables. The second column contains the standard error of the regression coefficient. The standard error of all the variables is the distance of the standard value from its true value. As can be seen from the table, the standard error of the constant term (intercept) is 1226 while it is 8.238 for the variable state. The third column is the calculated t-value for the data. This can be used to test that the corresponding population coefficient is 0. The probability that the population value for the corresponding variable is 0 is given in the last column. A row with small p-values and high t-values suggests that the variable is significant and contributes to the model.

Thomas Jefferson Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 3

Thomas Jefferson - Essay Example s notes that Jefferson was not a reflective political philosopher,  and the efforts Jefferson made at  political  philosophy were, in most cases, embarrassingly  shallow  and sometimes quite naive (1997). Secondly, although Ellis (1997) accepts the fact that Jefferson was a brilliant political theologian and  visionary, he does not leave out the point that the qualities of Jefferson displayed in his book were those of an  irrational  and outrageous political  personality. Ellis, in his article, argues that Jefferson was first to come up with the idea that peoples deepest  personal  longings were, as a matter of fact, achievable in his book, but then went ahead and suggested opposing principles in a way that hides their incompatibility. According to Ellis (1997), Americans saw Jefferson as a reassurance to them because of his many achievements, and any criticism was not welcome. In his book, Jefferson included some of his most memorable statements about the things he believed in  especially  in the political and social front (1995). However, Ellis (1997) points out that there are many ways that Jefferson failed to  bear  the full implications of his beliefs and  vision  about racism, slavery, and sexism, and wants to expose the underlying contradictions of Thomas Jefferson’s failure. From Ellis’ point of view we can conclude that no matter how influential and powerful a person is, there is always something to criticize him

Plastics Essay Example for Free

Plastics Essay From the mid-1980s onwards, plastic bags became common for carrying daily groceries from the store to vehicles and homes throughout the developed world. As plastic bags increasingly replaced paper bags, and as other plastic materials and products replaced glass, metal, stone, timber and other materials, a packaging materials war erupted, with plastic shopping bags at the center of highly publicized disputes. Although few peer-reviewed studies or government surveys have provided estimates for global plastic bag use, environmental activists estimate that between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are used each year worldwide. Plastic has replaced the traditional material (paper/cloth etc) as packing and carry bags because of cost and convenience which is possibly a wrong choice of material for such use. Even though plastic bags can preserve food and can be used for growing vegetables in a controlled environment, their method of disposal has creates unprecedented pollution problem. Plastic has many more uses other than Plastic Bags and Packing material. It is used for manufacturing of protective covers and parts for many machines, which should be the preferred utility for plastic. More than a 100 million tones of plastic is produced world-wide each year. Though plastics have opened the way for a plethora of new inventions and devices it has also ended up clogging the drains and becoming a health hazard. Many countries, including India, are trying to increase the amount of plastic that is recycled. But commercial interests create hindrance for effective legislation to remove plastics from goods where they can threaten public health. Also there is a clear trend of shipping off the plastic waste of developed countries to under develop and developing countries. India imported 7,841. 8 metric tonnes of plastic waste from the US in the first half of 1994. India is the fourth highest Asian importer of plastic waste behind Hong Kong, Philippines,Indonesia. Environmental pollution caused by routinely used polythene packaging materials; it would be prudent, for the present, to use eco-friendly paper packaging. The manufacturers of plastic packaging like soft drink bottles/mineral water bottles etc must come forward and develop appropriate methods of disposal/own responsibility for disposal. Plastic bags were found to constitute a significant portion of the floating marine debris in the waters around southern Chile in a study conducted between 2002 and 2005. If washed out to sea, plastic bags can be carried long distances by ocean currents, and can strangle marine animals or, if ingested, cause them to starve to death. [8] Numerous deaths among animals such as sea turtles and dolphins have been attributed to the ingestion of plastic marine litter, which includes plastic bags. Littering is often a serious problem in developing countries, where trash collection infrastructure is less developed than in wealthier nations. The relatively limited adoption of modern biodegradable plastic bags means that many older landfills are filled with large, persistent deposits of non-degrading bags. It is, however, possible that in the future these deposits could be mined and reprocessed to replace dwindling raw material resources. In recent times due to widespread awareness drive by NGOS and government and to lesser extent by educational institutions has resulted in increasing the consciousness among few shopkeepers they have shifted back to the old system of wrapping up goods in paper bags or newspapers, Some people are slowly getting habituated to going to the market with cloth bags. Besides a few NGOs, even school students have come forward to take up a promotion campaign for the use of paper or cloth bags. Each year, as industry produces more and more nonessential products individually and excessively packaged, we throw away more and more trash. To a large extent, our garbage problem is a result of a corporate ethic that puts profits before people and the environment. Industry is pushing disposability because it pays. Plastic razors can only be used a few times before disposal, then more must be bought, making the plastic and razor industries rich and happy. Appliances designed to become obsolete guarantee youll have to buy new ones next year. Over 84 percent (by weight) of municipal solid waste could be reused, recycled or composted instead of being buried or burned. An exception is plastic, which comprises about 7 percent by weight or 20 percent by volume of municipal solid waste. Due to technical and financial limitations, less than ten percent of plastic is currently recycled. Furthermore, plastic recycling only defers the plastic disposal problem, since most plastic items can only be manufactured from virgin plastic. Recycled polystyrene foam (also known by the brand name Styrofoam) can be used to build marine docks but not to make a new polystyrene foam cup. New plastic will have to be produced from non-renewable oil stocks to make those cups, and eventually all the plastic will have to be disposed of. Last February 21, 2011, the province of Albay, spearheaded by Gov. Joey Sarte Salceda became the first in the Bicol region to ban the use of plastic bags. Provincial Ordinance No. 011 – 3, which is also known as the â€Å"Anti – Plastic† Ordinance of the Province of Albay, prohibits the use of plastic bags on dry goods and regulating the use on wet goods and prohibiting the use of Styrofoam and other synthetic materials harmful to the environment. The ordinance, signed into law by the governor and lauded by the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan is expected to eradicate the use of plastics bag by any means. As cited in Section 2 of the ordinance, the law is for the compliance of all business establishments, groceries, department stores, supermarkets, chain retailers and sari-sari stores in the province. Likewise, utilization of alternative packaging materials such as woven native bags (bayong), reusable cloth, shopping bags (katsa), paper bags and other similar materials is encouraged. It is also a known fact that many of those plastic bags that shop owners used to pack their merchandise often ended up in streets. The hazards plastic pose for the province are numerous. Albay being a favorite spot of natural disasters is at risk with the threats of excessive use of plastic products. Also, the province gets littered by plastic bag garbage presenting an ugly and unhygienic seen. The soil fertility deteriorates as plastic bags form part of manure remains on the soil for years. This new ordinance should be taken sincerely because this not only speaks for the lives at stake but for the environment of the next generations as well. Large food chains like McDonald’s, Jollibee and others should start to ban Styrofoam packages among their products. Large supermarkets should take the initiatives and act upon the given law and use alternatives to pack the purchase of their customers. They should also convince customers to bring their own reusable bags when they go shopping. Educational programs anchored to the ordinance should also be created to be able to grasp the students’ awareness about this law. They should be educated as early as in primary years that they may become fully aware of it. Massive campaigns like door-to-door information drive, barangay seminars and other promotions using quad media will be helpful in the realization of the law. Furthermore, environmental awareness of each individual should be encouraged as well.

History of Ledd Zeppelin and ITs Musical Impact Essay -- Led Zeppelin

History of Ledd Zeppelin and ITs Musical Impact Tell someone to name a band from the 1960s and '70s and you could probably listen to a dozen answers before hearing the same one twice. The overwhelming amount of talent squeezed into these two decades has produced some of the most popular, most powerful, and in some cases, the most bizarre music ever. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Queen, Aerosmith, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Eagles.... All were from this era that seemed to glorify music as no other time period did, or ever will. The amount of evolution of music that occurred in this time period is amazing as well. The mainstream went from listening to songs like Bill Haley and the Comet's "Rock Around The Clock," to The Beatles' frightening "Revolution 9." While these two examples may seem completely different, they are not as distant as one might think. Nearly all music from the '60s and '70s was bred from its earlier ancestors. Music has been constantly evolving, and during the two decades in question, it underwent a radical change like never before. The New Yardbirds In early 1968 the music group The Yardbirds was in shambles. Their last, and half-put --together album "Little Games" was a total flop and the band had to struggle to have the release of the album in the UK stopped. On March 30, the group allowed a taping of their concert in Madison Square Garden to be considered for a live album to be released later. They easily convinced their record contractor, Epic Records, to ditch the project. The lead guitarist of The Yardbirds, Jeff Beck, had suffered from a mental breakdown a few years earlier and could no longer handle the pressure of touring. The band members, Keith Relf, Chris Dreja, Jim McCarty, and Jimmy Page decided to throw in the towel and let the band collapse. After a night of heavy drinking, Bonham had turned the wrong way in his sleep, and asphyxiated himself upon his own vomit. A statement was released on December 4, 1980, stating that the band could not go on in its present state. After 11 incredible years, the band could not function with "the loss of our dear friend." How a Literary Work Relates to My Own Life Essay

I think everyone can recall their first love. The emotions that one feels when remembering the look, smell, touch and feel of their first love are intense and can bring on incredible feelings of happiness. Finding a first love typically occurs in adolescence when humans have the ability to feel everything so much stronger than at any other time in life. Unlike any other person, a first love will never be forgotten and details about the romance will forever be etched in the brain. The details surrounding a first love do not often fade with time and remain as clear as when the relationship with a first love was reality. Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem, â€Å"How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways† can be used to once again evoke the emotions of a first love into the present day. The overall theme of this poem is intense romantic love. I think this theme can be applied to my high school years as well. Similar to many high school students, I engaged in a relationship with my first love that lasted for over two years. While this person did not turn out to be my one true love, I will never forget the feelings associated with the relationship nor will the love I felt then ever fade into nothingness. As a high school student, this relationship with my first love was the main focus of my life. The love I felt was all consuming just as the love that Elizabeth Barrett Browning portrays in this poem. I felt such an intense connection and I loved so unconditionally that my entire being was filled with feelings of love and it took my breath away. This love was exactly what Browning spoke about as being a love â€Å"with my childhood’s faith† (Browning, 1850). I was able to love with the faith of a child because I had not yet learned that the world is often a cruel place where love fails on a regular basis. My first love experienced my love based on a faith that it would last forever. The imagery in this poem enables a reader to imagine a dreamy state of complete happiness that nothing can intrude upon. This is the feeling I will always associate with my first love. The idea of a romantic relationship was so new and exciting that nothing could bring me down from the clouds. As a matter of fact, it is difficult for me to recall world events or even events in my own life at this time with the same clarity as my feelings of romantic love. Everything in my life took a backseat to the dreamy state of being in love. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was able to bring these feelings back to me as I read the poem. Her words invoke the same feelings of first love that I had into a written poem. It is easy for me to understand the type of love Browning had for the recipient of this poem because I have felt the same kind of love in my lifetime. Once again, the imagery of this poem enables me to remember the fearless way I was able to love when my understanding of the world was not marred with the failings of relationships. The final line sums of the entire set of emotions associated with a true love. â€Å"I shall but love thee better after death† (Browning, 1850) can be interpreted to mean that Browning would die without the love of the person she is writing to. I think this is the way that many adolescents feel about their first love. I remember feeling intense dread when I even considered that my first romantic relationship would end. The days took on new meaning and my entire being became wrapped up in another person and I could not ever imagine my life without that love. Looking back, I think I felt that without my first love in my life, I would rather die. I recall thinking that if I could not hold onto the relationship then I would rather be dead. Of course, time and maturity changed my way of thinking and I realized that I could live without my first love. However, my life will never be the same because of that relationship. It meant so much to me at the time that I know exactly how Elizabeth Barrett Browning felt about the recipient of the poem. I loved so strongly and so deeply that my entire life was changed forever. I loved as I had never loved before or have ever loved since then. My first love will forever hold a place in my heart and my life is better for having the chance to love so freely. Browning, Elizabeth Barrett. (1850). How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

Elizabethan Settlement - 992 Words

Elizabethan Settlement After Elizabeth took the throne and became the ruling monarch of England she wanted to relieve the tension between the Protestants and the Catholics. Elizabeth decided on a compromise between the two religions, one that would have characteristics of both, this new religion was called Anglicanism. The factors that caused Elizabeth to make this decision were her personal religious preferences, the views of the Marian Bishops and the opinions given to her by the parliament. However this compromise did have consequences. These include the dissatisfaction from both Protestants and Catholics, The Vestiarian Controversy and the Catholic opposition the settlement. After the death of Henry in 1547, a 10 year old Edward†¦show more content†¦Elizabeth had also been told by the Archbishop of Canterbury (Matthew Parker) that the Anglican Book of Common Prayer had been ignored by ministers of the church. The tensions between the two religions were soon seen by Elizabeth as the country broke out into civil war. A consequence that came from the opposition of the Catholics was that the Catholics of England were starting to oppose Elizabeth as their queen; they saw Mary, Queen of Scots to be more suited to the throne. France, a Catholic country was seen as a threat as Mary, Queen of Scots had married a French prince and may team up with France to overthrow Elizabeth as queen. Spain at this time was also a threat its king, Philip II was an ardent Catholic who wanted to stop the spread of Protestantism. France and Spain were the two most powerful powers and were strongly Catholic, and the Catholics in England saw Mary, Queen of Scots as their hope of restoration of Catholicism to England, Mary also had a claim to the English throne which made her more of a threat. Another consequence of the Elizabethan settlement was the Vestiarian Controversy. Puritans were unhappy with the Elizabethan settlement as they saw too many Catholic elements in the settlement, they saw Anglicanism insufficiently protestant in both worship and beliefs.
